Cancer is the second leading cause of global deaths. According to the World Health Organisation, cancer was responsible for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. This is approximately one in six deaths globally. The mortality from cancer is exceeded only by cardiovascular diseases. Research grants play a significant role in helping organisations and educational institutes to research cancer. Different organisations provide funds to advance cancer research to improve prevention, detection and treatment options.
Types of Cancer Research Grants
National Cancer Institute (NCI)
The National Cancer Institute is one of the prominent cancer research funding bodies.. It provides various funding options to advance cancer research.
Research Project Grants (RO1) are offered to research institutions according to NCI goals. National Cancer Institute RO1 grants are awarded for up to five years, to promote cancer research. The funding amount is up to $500,000 per year and is determined by the type of project. Â
Small Grant Program (RO3) supports small-scale projects that make marked contributions to cancer research. RO3 provides a grant of $50.000 for two years to support cancer research.Â
Exploratory Research Grant Award (R21) given to support innovative research projects that will lead to new results and promote cancer research. R21 provides up to $275,000 over two years.
American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Grants
The AACR has awarded over $540 million to scientists in cancer research. Over 3,400 scientists have benefited from this grant since the association’s inception in 1993.
AACR-Novocure Cancer Research Grant supports independent scientists focused on Tumour Treating Fields (TTFields) research. The grant provides up to $350,000 for three years.
AACR-Career Development Awards $130,000 over two years for early scientists interested in pursuing a career in cancer research.Â
American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) Grants
AICR focuses on supporting projects aimed at preventing cancer. This underscores the roles of diet, nutrition and lifestyle in cancer prevention and treatment.
Investigator-initiated Research Grant Program supports innovative research on the influence of lifestyle on cancer risks and outcomes. It provides up to $150,000 per year for two years.
Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) Grants support research initiatives on lung cancer. The research focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of lung cancer. The funding is $100,000 and varies based on the extent of the project.
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) Grants
PanCAN provides several grant opportunities to scientists involved in pancreatic cancer research. This program funds early researchers interested in pancreatic cancer treatment. The PanCAN program gives up to $75,000 per year for a year with an option to extend without a cost.
Rising Tide Foundation Grants
Rising Tide Foundation grants support researchers in clinical trials to improve patients’ recovery in oncology. They support projects in innovative procedures to improve early detection and treatment strategies for lung cancer patients. The foundation gives grants between $100.000 and $250,000. The funding depends on the nature and scope of the project.
Cancer research is growing with several investigators exploring preventive, diagnostic and treatment options for the disease that is ranked second as the cause of global deaths. Several organisations and foundations have provided seed grants to enhance this research. The funding, however, depends on the scope of each project.
